Education- especially that of girls and women – saves lives, reduces inequality and transforms communities.
There is no dispute about the benefits of education; a child born to a literate mother is 50 per cent less likely to die before the age of five. Every extra year of education is estimated to increase a girl’s earning power by 10 to 20 percent. Girls who have completed seven years of education will marry on average five years later than uneducated girls.
Education transforms societies. It challenges ineqaulity and discrimination. And education is often the most effective means of reducing ineqaulity. But more than 150 million children in the world have to work to help their families instead of going to school. All for thousands of millions of other children, access to education is hopelessly inadequate.
Better life Aid and Tours believes a good quality, publicly-funded education should be available to all children. We work in over 100 communities across the three northern regions to help girls and boys get the education they need. By employing local communities and supporting organizations at all levels, we are working to remove barriers and aim to help all children realize the full potential of education.
For example, our Right Education project in Sirigu (Bolgatanga) has brought together community leaders, teachers, parents, and children to press for higher standards in schools. This has led to the production of school improvement plans that are both understood and widely supported in the community.
Our education work focuses on four key areas.
Promoting rights in schools
Better Life Aid and Tours supports parents, children, teachers, unions, communities, and local organizations to monitor and improve the quality of public education, including delivering the ACRE project (action for children’s rights in education) in Ghana.
Financing education
In many poor countries, education is chronically underfunded. Better Life Aid and Tours campaigns for a greater share of funds to be spent on education in ways that benefit girls and marginalized children.
Girl’s education and violence
In many societies, girls suffer discrimination at school, through violence and prejudice. Better Life Aid and Tours ground-breaking projects in Ghana are helping over 300 girls stay in school.
Empowerment through literacy
At least five million women have learned to read and write-and many more millions of lives have been changed – through Reflect, our internationally renowned approach to adult learning.
Transform the Life of a Child in Need
When you sponsor a child, you achieve a special kind of giving that creates a relationship between you and the community where Saved the Children’s caring professionals are helping to change the future. Sponsorship provides essential aid and education to improve the well-being of children. It gives you the opportunity to witness young lives transformed for the future. When you sponsor a child, two lives are changed : a child’s and yours!
Why is child sponsorship important for community development?
Child sponsorship is a mechanism of fundraising that links sponsors with children in Ghana communities. Through child sponsorship, Better Life Aid raises funds from individual supporters who want to contribute to positive change in other communities. Children are representatives of the community and they play an important role in sustainable community development. Child safety and protection is our highest priority, and all children involved in our community projects are treated with dignity and respect.
Through Child Sponsorship funding, our programme interventions are increasingly focused on addressing human rights, the empowerment of poor and excluded people, and in the formation of strong community interest groups in order to address poverty and injustice. We also strive to demonstrate that our work is having a positive impact on tackling the root causes of poverty and injustice affecting the lives of poor and excluded girls and boys, women and men, at local levels, and that we are held accountable to them for the quality of our work and that of our partners. Our programmes activities are designed to promote personal and community learning, strengthen capacity, and mobilize individuals and communities to demand their rights.
Do something amazing and make a difference, not just for a child but for the whole community, by sponsoring a child. You can sponsor a child if you’re based in the Australia, USA, UK.
