If you are searching for a program to travel abroad with, I would highly recommend that you volunteer through Better Life Aid and Tours (BLAT). I volunteered with BLAT back in 2013 for a month. I would say that this was one of the most enriching experiences I have had. This company is founded by Mike Zuri and Ayinbila, two individuals who had a vision to make their community a better place. Unlike a generic company that specializes in sending volunteers all over the world, Mike and Ayinbila actually live in Ghana. The families you will be volunteering with are people that they interact with in their every day to day lives and watch struggle.
I got to experience a variety of environments with BLAT. I taught at an orphanage, facilitated at a high school, worked on a farm, tasted homemade Ghana meals, and got to immerse myself in Ghanaian culture. Being 17 at the time and coming from a household with very strict parents, I was very scared, but the host did a superb job at making me feel safe and secure.
